Flow Testing
One
of the newer additions to the cylinder head machine shop is a new Superflow SF-600 flowbench.
This larger unit replaces our
previous bench, a Superflow SF-110 that was one of the first
commercially available flowbenches in the
Madison area.
The best-known use of a flowbench is
to measure the flow of air through the intake and exhaust ports of a
motor. This is an indicator of the efficiency of the port
configuration.
With the incredibly high horsepower
to displacement ratios of today’s sportbike motors and the
competitiveness of the twins classes, the ability to assess the
cylinder head performance is critical. You can tell if you are doing a
good thing to a cylinder head with your porting tools or a bad thing
(sometimes the only way to discover the good things is to do a few bad
things…..spoken from experience).
Another use is the flowtesting of
carburetors, throttle bodies and exhaust manifolds.
In engine development this allows a
tuner to balance the systems and choose the various external
components. For example, if a cylinder head will flow 175 cfm (cubic
feet of air per minute) at the maximum valve lift the cam to be used
provides, there is no reason to fit a carburetor that flows 190 cfm,
unless a reduction in throttle response is desired.
This SF-600 flowbench is the same
used by the leading cylinder head specialists throughout the country,
and even the world. It is available for cylinder head development
Flowtesting is done by the hour or
day.

Technology enhancements of the in-house dyno program, the
computerized Super flow flow bench, racepak data recorders, and digital
machining capabilities allow the most up-to-date range of services
possible.
